Folks, the news industry today is just that, an industry. It is a business that exists solely to make money, period.
We haven't had real journalism in America since Walter Cronkite retired, and even he threw in a few opinions on occasion.
Fox News is slanted heavily to the right. MSNBC is slanted heavily to the left. There is NOTHING fair, balanced, or unbiased about either one. It's just the way it is.

Right on Paul.
If you want balanced media your only hope is to gather information from multiple sources and review them with a critical mind. Extract the facts and junk the other garbage.
I try to catch some of each as well as my research of organizations including government. I base my opinion on what I find. You must take in all sides to form an intelligent opinion and to comment on hot issues. I find most main stream media to be very left leaning and some cable news to be more right, you have to know how to balance the two by doing your own research. The character assinations are turning people away and they need to start reporting more than having editorials.
These are the lyrics to a song I used to listen to in HS. 25 years later and we're no better off!
Meat The Press
In a ninety-floor Manhattan address
Lives a watchdog called the National Press
And around his collar's written the lines:
'The Protector Of Our Hearts And Minds'
Hark! Hark!
The dog will bark.
And we believe this hierarch
But read between the lines and see
This dog's been barking up the wrong tree
Meat the press
When the ratings point the camera's eye
They can state the facts while telling a lie
And then Watchdog shows to the viewers at ten
He's a bloodhound with a pad and a pen
Can't pin the blame - he's out of reach
Just call the dog - 'His Royal Leech'
We held the rights for heaven's sake
'Til we gave this sucker an even break
Meat the press
When the godless chair the judgment seat
We can thank the godless media elite
They can silence those who fall from their grace
With a note that says, 'we haven't the space'
Well lookee there, the dog's asleep
Whenever we march or say a peep
A Christian can't get equal time
Unless he's a looney committing a crime
Listen up if you've got ears
I'm tired of condescending sneers
I've got a dog who smells a fight
And he still believes in wrong and right
Meat the press

I agree that the news industry has veered widely from reporting the news. However, if it were primarily a money making venture, we would see less of the media reporting on itself, lamenting lagging publication sales and viewer ratings. Instead, they would focus their efforts on finding out what their audiences want and give it to them. And this should also serve as evidence that the news channels aren't just "giving 'em what they want."
So, if there is no striving for balance, and there is no real pursuit of profit, then clearly they are focused on spreading their ideologies. I personally find it sad that I'm exposed to a greater variety of topics and headlines from the avowed commentators than those claiming to be reporters.
I wouldn't say it was dumbed-down. Some of it is quite clever in the way its phrased and slanted. I've watched the same story reported by Fox and MSNBC, both with very different conclusions.
I agree, the news itself isn't dumbed-down. But the fact that you catch the subtle slant in phrasing should reveal that you are not the intended audience. In my opinion, most national news is geared toward those who don't notice the slant. You should pat yourself on the back!
Well fox is slanted the other way. Surely YOU didnt miss that.
That, Mr. Hippie, is WHY I show them the same story on the two networks. CNN slants so far left they are nearly vertical. Fox slants to the right (many liberals would say they are nearly vertical as well.) The juxtaposition makes the leanings too obvious to miss.
It's hard to believe that there are people out there that DON'T notice the slant. I've never found any -- at least not once I've shown them the same story aired on CNN and FoxNews.
But you've pointed the slant out. Without that, how long would it have taken before then caught on by themselves. Furthermore, many people just won't believe that the Big 3 could slant their news, even though that is likely where they've heard that Fox news is slanted. So they go on taking the networks in, all the while thinking they are so smart for not even giving Fox the time of day.
