I'm a scientist by training (biologist, biochemist, chemist), and I have been reading a lot about economics. I'm always interested in the science side of these things. And, my economics perspective says that, if the people in the US wanted a high speed rail, there would be a demand and some NON-governmental person/group would build one. The $53B being flushed for high speed rails, other than a union pay-off, would be much better in the hands of people creating a demand and producers meeting that demand.
